Blicker, Seymour

Seymour Blicker

Playwright, screenwriter, and novelist, born in Montreal in 1940, and based in Quebec. Seymour Blicker's plays have been produced in Canada, the United States, and Europe. In 1997 he received the British Council International New Playwriting Award for his play Pals. As a screenwriter, he has worked in Canada, the United States, Europe, and New Zealand.

Blicker's comedy, Up Your Alley, premiered in January 1987 at the inauguration of the re-opening of the renovated Saidye Bronfman Centre of Montreal. It was co-produced by Elite Productions and the Saidye Bronfman Centre, and directed by Alexandre Hausvater.

The world premiere of Never Judge a Book by its Cover took place in September 1987 in New York, produced by Triangle Productions at the Gene Frankel/American Mime Theater, and directed by Richard Mover. The Dutch language premiere was in March 1988, with a sold-out, six-month, fifty-city tour of Holland and Belgium. Directed by Britain's Alexander Doré, the play featured two of Holland's popular actors, Piet Bambergen and Rudi Falkenhagen. The play's success led to a major TV Production in the Netherlands in 1990 with the Dutch title 'N Hoofdstuk Apart. In November 1991 Never Judge a Book by its Cover enjoyed an extended run at Vienna's Josefstadt/Kammerspiele Theatre under the German title Verlegtes Gluck. The Canadian premiere was in 1996 at Theatre Lac-Brome, Knowlton, Quebec, produced by Echo Arts Productions, and directed by Emma Stevens, the Theatre's founder.

Pals was produced by Infinitheatre of Montreal at "La Cabane" in September and October 2000, directed by Guy Sprung, who has also directed staged readings of Home Free (1998) and Pipe Dreams (2000).
