Britt, Fanny
Francophone playwright and translator, born 1977 in Amos, Abitibi, Quebec and grew up in Montreal. She graduated from the playwriting programme at l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada (National Theatre School of Canada) in Montréal in 2001.
In 2001-2002, her translation of The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh, was produced at Théâtre la Licorne and at Théâtre du Trident (dir. Martin Faucher). She has translated Kvetch by Steven Berkoff for Théâtre Niveau Parking, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain for Théâtre de la Petite Marée, and The Good Person of Setzuan by Bertolt Brecht for Théâtre du Trident. For the Carrefour international de théâtre de Québec, she has translated Cul-de-sac by Daniel MacIvor in 2004, and Half-Life by John Mighton in 2005.
Her own play, Honey Pie, was written in 2002 for the National Theatre School, and remounted at Espace Libre in 2003 (dir. Claude Poissant). Couche avec moi (c’est l’hiver), was presented in a co-production by Théâtre Petite à Petite at Espace Go and Théâtre de la Bordée in their 2006-2007 seasons.
Couche avec moi focuses on the corrosive effects of all-pervasive pornography on the souls of five 25- to 35-year-old urbanites. Britt describes her characters as oscillating between fantasy and reality, between exhibitionism and modesty. Longing for respect as an artist, Herbert enlists Pierre and Suzanne as a living "everyday couple" exhibited in his museum video-installation piece, including in the mix his sister and a swinging visitor from Britain working as a sex-shop clerk.
She won the Governor General’s Award in 2013 for her French-language drama Bienveillance, and another GG in 2021 for her novel Faire les sucres.
