Festivals for theatre exist across Canada, with a wide range of mandates, durations, and audiences. Some were originally playwright-based (Shaw and Shakespeare), some feature alternative and experimental theatre. Others produce plays that reflect a local community, or focus on women's performance. Many of these festivals to some extent define Canadian theatre and Canadian culture.

Among the festivals profiled in the Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia on the WWW are: Blyth Festival, Carrefour International de Théâtre, Charlottetown Festival, Dominion Drama Festival, duMaurier World Stage Festival, Festival Antigonish, Festival TransAmériques, Saskatchewan Festival of Words, Fringe Movement, Just For Laughs, Labrador Creative Arts Festival, playRites, Newfoundland and Labrador Drama Festival, Shaw Festival, Stratford Festival, SummerWorks, Women in View, and FemFest (hosted by Sarasvati Productions).
