Ground Zero Theatre

A not-for–profit theatre organization created in April 1997, based in Calgary Alberta, popularly referred to as GZT. It produced provocative, alternative contemporary theatre. Its mission was to develop and nurture home-grown talent in an environment which bridges the gap between educational and professional theatre by combining established artists with up and coming artists.

Selected shows included: Writer's Block by Eugene Stickland (dir. Bob White); My Morocco, written and performed by Ken Cameron; Little Mercy’s First Murder by Morwyn Brebner; Pervert, The Boy’s Own Jedi Handbook, and Looking After Eden, all by Stephen Massicotte; Beautiful Lake Winnipeg by Maureen Hunter; Shopping & F***ing by Mark Ravenhill; Killer Joe; CockTales; Blue Surge; The Vagina Monologues; The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets; A Fabulous Disaster (with One Yellow Rabbit); The Pillowman, Race, and Land of the Dead (co-productions with Hit & Myth Productions).

GZT also hosted the “Groundbreakers” series, featuring new work by local artists.

Actor Ryan Luhning was the founding Artistic Director. Ground Zero's final production Julius Caesar in collaboration with The Shakespeare Company and Hit & Myth Productions in September 2017.

GZT performed in various theatre and found spaces in Calgary, including the Vertigo Theatre studio, the Reeve Theatre at the University of Calgary, and the Pumphouse Theatre.
