John Alonzo Russell

Architect and set and costume designer, born in Hinsdale, New Hampshire in 1907, died in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1966. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before coming to teach at the University of Manitoba in 1928.

He became involved in the local arts scene, designing over ninety stage sets for the Winnipeg Ballet (later the Royal Winnipeg) and the Little Theatre (later Manitoba Theatre Centre). He also designed for the University Glee Club and civic pageants, such as the 1939 Royal visit. For his creative contributions to theatre and his work as a lecturer, he received an award in 1940 from the governing committee on Drama Awards in Vancouver.
