Wuethrich, Hugo

Designer, born in Switzerland in 1927; died in Montreal in February 2010 at the age of 83.

Hugo Wuethrich studied and worked in England and France before coming to Canada in 1951. He worked in film and at Radio-Canada.

He was responsible for the designs of several premieres including Marie-Claire Blais' L'Exécution.

He has worked with Paul Buissonneau and his Théâtre de Quat'Sous, Paul Blouin, François Barbeau, Yvette Brind'Amour and her Théâtre du Rideau Vert, and taught at the National Theatre School of Canada.

Wuethrich has said of designing, "You don't find a style, in art, by making a copy but by creating from the original. All styles which have arisen in the theatre have done so beginning from original texts. A style was never developed by redoing what was already done. A personal style occurs through pure creation with a base of what already exists. Creation interests me; creation with the director and the writer."
