Bull, Roland

Actor Roland Bull was born in London, England on June 16th, 1930. His early performances in Canada include The Importance of being Earnest with the International Players in Toronto. He has since acted in many Ontario and Quebec theatres: in Venus Observed and The Green Bay Tree (1952) with the New Play Society in Toronto; and in Salad Days (1952), directed by Barry Morse at Hart House Theatre in Toronto. He was with the Montreal Drama Studio and the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario in The Reluctant Debutante (1952).

For the Stratford Festival he has performed in Richard III (1953) with Sir Alec Guinness and Irene Worth; All’s Well That Ends Well (1953); Oedipus Rex (1954) with James Mason; Julius Caesar (1954) with Lorne Greene and William Shatner; Measure For Measure (1954) with James Mason; The Merchant of Venice (1955); and The Taming of the Shrew (1955) with William Shatner and Douglas Rain. He performed in Tamburlaine the Great on Broadway (1958) with Anthony Quayle, Colleen Dewhust, William Hutt, William Shatner, and Eric House; and in The Entertainer with Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright.

Roland Bull has also played in summer stock in Vineland with Bernard Slade’s Company (1951), and in Peterborough, Ontario with Eric Christmas’s Company (1952).

From 1976 to 2000 Roland Bull acted in Theatre Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland (Galileo, The Lady from the Sea, The Way of the World, Uncle Vanya, She Stoops to Conquer). For the past ten years, he has acted at the Center Stage in Baltimore in She Stoops to Conquer (1993), An Ideal Husband (2001), Macbeth (2002), and Lady Windermere’s Fan (2004), and many others.

His radio work includes dramatic series at CBC Toronto with producer Andrew Allan, and a season of Shakespeare with CBC Wednesday Night and the Stage 51, 62 and 63 series.

He has acted in shows on American Public Television, and on the CBC in dramas directed by Norm Jewison, Arthur Hiller, and Henry Kaplan, appearing with Kate Reid and Robert Goulet.
