Dubois, René-Daniel

René-Daniel Dubois

Playwright/actor/director born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1955.

He studied science before entering the National Theatre School of Canada in 1973. He worked as an actor for two years and then decided to write and to continue his studies in Paris.

On his return to Canada in 1979, his plays began to receive production (sometimes with him acting in them). His output is as varied as it could be, extending from the multi-lingual surrealism of Ne blâmez jamais les Bédouins (1984), which can be performed by many actors or one, as he performed it at its premiere, to the insane comic romp Panique à Longueuil, to the chamber-thriller Being at Home With Claude.

He has come under fire for accusing Quebec Nationalists of having abandoned their cultural base for a more technocratic one.

In April 1999, he directed Espace Go's production of Ionesco's Le roi se meurt/Exit the King ).

Among his many notable performances is one in particular: when he played one of the Learned Ladies in Molière's Les Femmes savantes at Théâtre du Rideau Vert in 1997.

He performed his own work, Quelques inédits et "peu connus" at the Monument National, in March, 2000.

His other plays include: 26 bis, impasse du colonel Foisy (premiered at Café de la Place des Arts, 1986), Deux Contes parmi tant d'autres pour une tribu perdue (Omnibus, 1985), Le printemps, monsieur Deslauriers (Compagnie Jean-Duceppe, 1987), "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" by William Shakespeare (written in English, Theatre Passe Muraille, 1987), Et Laura ne répondait rien... (Théâtre de Quat'Sous, 1990).

In 2015, his novel, Vestibule - Le livre inachevé was published by Leméac.
