Jumblies Theatre

A community theatre, based in Toronto, Ontario, which fosters inclusivity and collaborations between professional artists and diverse individuals, groups and communities. It was founded in 2001 by its Artistic Director, Ruth Howard, inspired by the British Community Play form. The name it taken from a nonsense poem by Edward Lear, in which the Jumblies, “whose heads are green and hands are blue” go to sea in a sieve and survive many miraculous adventures.

Jumblies Theatre undertakes multi-year residencies in neighbourhoods and communities to create new performances through partnerships, working with experienced artists. It offers mentorship in arts that engage with and create community, collaborates with community organizations, and initiates partnerships with other professional arts organizations. Jumblies engages in workshops, and touring and collaborative projects across Ontario and Canada. It performs in found spaces in Toronto and Scarborough, such as parks and streets.

Since 1999, productions have included: Twisted Metal & Mermaids Tears; I’m Tapingi Too!; Once A Shoreline; Bridge of One Hair; Oy Di Velt Vern Yinger; Like An Old Tale; Touching Ground.

In Spring 2015, Jumblies produced Train of Thought-- a three-year community arts project with Vancouver Moving Theatre and ninety-five partners. Train of Thought was a west-to-east-coast tour by train and bus to foster cross-cultural relations, with twenty-five stops, seventy-five travellers, and hundreds of participants across the country.

In January 2014, Jumblies moved to a new downtown home-base, called The Ground Floor, in a Toronto community housing block, part of the new condo development called CityPlace.
