A member of the Associated Designers of Canada, Stancil Campbell has designed major theatre productions in Canada, USA, Scotland, Ghana, and Egypt. Based in Edmonton Alberta for nearly twenty years, he was resident designer for the Phoenix Theatre and for the Citadel Theatre. At the Citadel he designed thirty-five productions including Henry IV Part I, Fool for Love, Biloxi Blues, Annie, Mephisto, Burn This, Speed the Plow, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Other Desert Cities (2016), and Broadway Bound for which he received an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for best lighting.

For the Phoenix Theatre he designed twenty-three productions, including Torch Song Trilogy, Cloud Nine, ‘Night Mother, As Is, and The Wolf Within for which he received an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for best scenery. Stancil Campbell designed the original Phoenix production of B-Movie that went on to win numerous Dora Mavor Moore Awards in Toronto including his award for best lighting. He received an Edmonton Civic Award for outstanding achievement in theatre during 1987.

Other theatres for which he has designed across Canada include Vancouver Playhouse (B-Movie), Pacific Theatre (Master Harold and the Boys and Remnants), Chemainus Theatre (Godspell and The Good Doctor), Alberta Theatre Projects (Miracle Mother), Theatre Calgary (Driving Miss Daisy), Northern Light Theatre (Women Beware Women), Canadian Stage (B-Movie and Breaking the Code), Royal Alexandra Theatre (Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound), Ottawa’s National Arts Centre (North Shore Live, Prisoner of Zenda, and Beautiful Lake Winnipeg), 25th Street Theatre (Rodeo Life and The Harrowing), Theatre Network (Melody Farm), and Regina’s Globe Theatre (A Perfect Ganesh).

In addition to his Canadian work, Stancil Campbell has designed well over a hundred productions outside of Canada including ones at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (Twelfth Night and Macbeth), Scotland’s Royal Lyceum (B-Movie), Boston’s Wilbur Theatre (B-Movie), and the Cleveland Playhouse (Breaking the Code).

Over the years, he has combined his professional career with university teaching. He taught as well as designed at the University of North Carolina (Trojan Women and Hamlet), the University of Alberta (The Good Doctor and Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean), Berea College (The Rez Sisters and The Rivals), Francis Marion College (Tartuffe and Right You Are if You Think You Are), the University of Ghana (Tobias and the Angel), Trinity Western University (Quiet in the Land and R.U.R.), and the American University in Cairo (Comedy of Errors and The Illusion).

Stancil Campbell has recently retired from active teaching and is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Performing and Visual Arts at The American University in Cairo. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Wake Forest University, a B.F.A. from the University of North Carolina, an M.F.A. from the University of Oregon, as well as a graduate diploma in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies and an M.A. in Political Science from American University in Cairo.
