Syncope

Long one-act play by René Gingras, premiered by Médium médium, January 7, 1983, translated into English by Linda Gaboriau as Breaks, presented by The Acting Company, Toronto, 1988. Winner of the Governor General’s Award.

Three days, three men, three generations; confrontation and rapprochement. Pit, a composer-musician in his 30s, sees an aggressive and confrontational young epileptic. At the same time, the landlord arrives, a man in his 50s, to pontificate and share his tiresome philosophies.

Unusual, intense and silly, the chemistry which develops among the three is sometimes violent, sometimes tender and finds resolution in Pit's music.
