Theatre company, founded in 2016 in Calgary Alberta as a rebranding of Urban Curvz. Handsome Alice is “a project and performance based theatre company supporting female perspectives through creative narratives that fuse life with art. [It acts] as a catalyst for activating the female voice through performances and events that empower both artists and the community, reaching across socio-cultural landscapes” (website). Current Artistic Producer is Meg Farhall.
The inaugural production under the new name was Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) directed by Kate Newby. In September, 2016, it produced The Tall Building by Edmonton playwright Jill Connell (dir. Denise Clarke) — a "brittle, surreal, funny meditation on city life, in a dystopian world where people live atomized lives that are piled on top of one another, even as they’re completely separated from one another" (Stephen Hunt. https://thehalfstep.live 13 Sept 16). The season also included The Good Bride by Rosemary Rowe (dir. Trevor Schmidt).
Handsome Alice partnered with Mount Royal University’s department of diversity and human rights and the Calgary Sexual Health Centre to create an opportunity for female MRU students to share their stories through the inVISIBLE Project. The 2017-2018 season included: in-inVISIBLE Collective Creation (Dir. Kate Newby), and A Chitenge Story by Makambe k. Simamba (Dir. Kathryn Smith).
In the 2018-19 season the Company presented A Love Letter to Emily C by Sheri-D Wilson (dir. Trevor Schmidt), and a staged reading of Boom Baby by Natalie Meisner (dir. Pamela Halstead).
The 2019-2020 season featured Invisible (Too), a collective creation (dir. Makambe K. Simamba and Kathryn Smith), in partnership with the University of Lethbridge; and Between Us by Meg Farhall and Michael Rolfe (dir. Vanessa Porteous).
For the 2022/2023 season These Moments of Shine by Camille Pavlenko (dir. Bronwyn Steinberg) played at Lunchbox Theatre Stage 2; and The F Word by Keshia Cheesman and Bianca Miranda (dir. Donna-Michelle St. Bernard) with Alberta Theatre Projects and Downstage Performance Society at Theatre Calgary.
The Grand Makambe Speaks by Makambe K. Simamba was directed by Eric Rose with Ghost River Theatre in 2023.
The 2023/2024 season featured Uprooted 2, a Collective Creation (dir. Geraldine Fuenmayor); a staged reading of Tuberose, Ginger and Other Essences by Geraldine Fuenmayorg; and Beautiful Man by Erin Shields (dir. Clare Preuss), with Verb Theatre and Downstage.
