Whitfield, Michael J.

Ontario-based lighting designer, for many years the resident lighting designer for the Stratford Festival, but has also worked at theatres across the country, designing for plays, ballet and opera.

He joined Stratford in 1974 and since has designed over 100 shows for the Festival (including School for Scandal, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, Camelot and Oedipus Rex).

He has also designed for the Shaw Festival (She Loves Me, 2000), the Canadian Opera Company, San Francisco Opera, Minnesota Opera, Dallas Opera, Vancouver Opera, National Ballet and American Ballet Theatre (among many others).

In 1988 he received a Dora Mavor Moore Award for his design for Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Toward the Somme (Canadian Stage). He is married to designer Susan Benson.
