Awards created in 1979 and given annually to theatre productions and artists presented in Toronto, Ontario , during the previous year. It is named after theatre artist, Dora Mavor Moore and is administered by the Toronto Theatre Alliance.
The awards are now given in three divisions: Large Theatre, Mid-Sized Theatre and Small Theatre. Specific awards are given (usually in each division) for: best new play or musical, best production of a play, best production of a musical, direction, performance by a male in a play, performance by female in a play, performance by a male in a musical, performance by a female in a musical, set design, lighting design, costume design, sound/music. Awards are also given for best production in theatre for young audiences and for best choreography and best dance performance.
Some winners of the award have been: Jim Betts , Doris Petrie , Robert Thomson , Djanet Sears , Leslie Frankish , Robert Lepage , Heath Lamberts , Susan Benson , Ereca Hassell , Brent Carver , Drew Hayden Taylor , Guillermo Verdecchia , Sue LePage , Phillip Silver , Paul Thompson , Allan Stratton , Daniel MacIvor , John Krizanc and Tomson Highway . However, the awards were the centre of controversy in 1999 when the newly-established, and acclaimed, Soulpepper Theatre Company were shut out of the nominations.
The award is given out at a gala ceremony.
