Reineke, Gary

Ontario-based actor, born May 20, 1940 in Thorp, Wisconsin, one of ten children; died September 23, 2024. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and became an English teacher for middle and high school students in Milwaukee and Minneapolis. Disenchanted with the school system, he studied theatre in Seattle, Washington, subsequently relocating to Toronto. In 1977 he married actress Brenda Donohue, who tragically died of cancer in 1979.

Gary Reineke had a solid career performing on stages across Canada. In 1980 he won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for his performance in Toronto Free Theatre's production of Buried Child. He has also given focused, witty performances at Centaur Theatre (The Visitor, Creeps, Tooth of Crime); Citadel Theatre (Later Life); Factory Theatre (Taking Liberties); Tarragon Theatre (The Cherry Orchard); Lilies/Les Feluettes; National Arts Centre (Jitters); and the Grand Theatre, London (Timon of Athens) among many others.

He was the first anglophone actor nominated in the best actor category (for The Visitor) at the Masques Awards (1996). In March 1999, he appeared in the National Arts Centre/Grand Theatre, London production of Elliot Hayes' Homeward Bound; in the October, 1999 production of John Mighton's Short History of Night at Factory Theatre; and in the March 2000 production of Anton Piatigorsky's The Offering.

Gary Reineke also performed extensively in the United States and on radio, television, and in eighty films since 1974.
